The “Greens” Team

LCA has a long tradition of winning golfers—and this year is no exception!  Off to state for the Lady Eagles are Junior Madisen Bentley and Candice Fenton. Madisen was the medalist at districts shooting a 79 and is no stranger to post season play… she’s been a part of the State Champion Eagles since her freshman year. Madisen says that “The toughest part about golf is mental. I’m really thankful for my parents and Coach Gus who have kept me focused and provided me with great opportunities to play and get where I am.” She’s looking beyond LCA to college… and more golf—possibly at Fresno State.

Candice Fenton, a sophomore, also qualified for the State Tournament. In her first trip to post season play, she shot a personal best of 97 to make the cut. The Lady Eagles ended up in 3rd place overall, with solid rounds turned in by Sophomore Hannah Arnold – also her first year in post season play.

On the guys side, Freshman Nick Friend took second place at Districts, missing the medalist honors by only 1 stroke! He’s only been golfing for a couple of years, but already is thinking about playing in college. This is his first year at LCA and he really appreciates the friends he’s made here both on and off the course. Nick has a great sense of humor and said that Coach Gus is “the best coach in the United States, possibly even the world”! Of course, Coach Gus was standing right beside him! Also standing beside him was Connell Lee — Nick made sure to say that he really appreciates the “special gifts” Connell brings to the team.

The Eagles took home third place team honors, with Sophomore Connell Lee and Junior Jeffrey Mattheis qualifying for the State Tournament which will be held at The Home Course in DuPont May 21—23.

Both teams are coached by Don Gustafson ten year coach of LCA’s state-championship-winning golf teams, who was selected by the National Federation of State High School Associations to receive the 2010 NFHS Coaches Association State Coaches Award in the sport of Girls Golf.
