  • Promotes the role our schools play in educating state citizens for the common good;
  • Promotes the rights of parents to educate their children in the schools of their choice;
  • Encourages program excellence and the right of schools to fulfill their unique mission;
  • Fosters participation of private schools in helping shape local and state educational policy;
  • Advocates for equitable access for private school students to state and federal programs;
  • Monitors and analyzes legislation and regulations affecting private schools;
  • Provides information about private education to policy makers and the public;
  • Keeps the private school community informed on issues and programs.
Washington Interscholastic Activities Association

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association exists to assist member schools in operating student programs that foster achievement, respect, equity, enthusiasm and excellence in a safe and organized environment.

The indicators to determine satisfactory progress toward achieving the mission shall be:

  • At least 80 percent of all students within a member school will be active participants in at least one (1) activity annually.
  • Public understanding and support of the value of interscholastic activities and athletics in education will be increased.
  • All member schools will implement a written plan to address citizenship.
  • All member schools will employ competent, caring and knowledgeable coaches.
  • Achievement and excellence will be recognized.

OSPI coordinates the approval of private schools as an education option for Washington students.

Washington regulations state that a "private school" is a non-public school conducting a program consisting of kindergarten and at least grade one or any of all grades one through twelve. Minimum standards of health, safety, and education are also defined. Approval is granted by the State Board of Education upon completion of the application for approval and recommendation by the Director of Education Support/Private Education.
